Lot Essay

We are grateful to Professor Giancarlo Sestieri for confirming the attribution on the basis of a transparency. He points to its close technical relationship with the artist's Sibyl in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which is signed and dated '1726'. Another depiction of this subject, freer in handling, but of similar dimensions and employing the same compositional formula was sold at Sotheby's, London, 10 July 1974, lot 84. (see G. Sestieri, in the catalogue of the exhibition, Sebastiano Conca, Gaeta, Palazzo de Vio, 1981, pp. 158-161, nos. 34-35).
