An early 18th-Century 4 in. (10.2 cm.) diameter terrestrial pocket globe
Smith's circa 1810
made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores, with metal axis pins at the poles, the equatorial, Greenwich meridian and ecliptic graduated in degrees, the last with sigils for the houses of the Zodiac, the oceans showing the tracks of Cook, Clerke, Gore, Phipps, Severs, Marshall, Scarborough and Shortland, with dates and various notes such Owyhee where Cook was killed 1779, the continents outlined and shaded in green, red, yellow and orange, and showing cities, deserts, lakes, rivers and mountains, China showing the Great Wall, Africa with NIGRITIA in the West and HOTTENTOTS in the South, Australia labelled NEW HOLLAND with projected southern coastline, separate to Diemens Land. The globe contained within a wood covered fishskin case
