The Mayflower was designed by Mr. George Watson, the famous English yacht designer, and was built by J.and G. Thomson, of Clyde Bank, Scotland in 1896. Five presidents have used the yacht: Presidents Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, Harding and Coolidge. The Mayflower is a naval ship which is set aside by the Navy Department for the use of the presdient of the United States. She is operated under Naval regulations in the same manner as any other naval vessel. Mr. Lever's commission for the painting was from a group of prominent art patrons.
