Frederick Gordon Crosby
XIX Grand Prix De L'A.C.F. 1925, Antonio Ascari's Accident;
and Benoist's Victory,
pencil and grey wash heightened with white,
signed and dated 'Paris 1925'
each --15 x 15in (38.1 x 38.1cm)
(a pair)
The 1925 race was the first Grand Prix De L'A.C.F to be held on the new purpose built Montlhery circuit. Rain fell early in the event on the smooth new surface, this appeared to catch Ascari out as he misjudged this curve after Bailleau, the Alfa Romeo P2 became entangled in the paling fence, eventually rolling into the ditch causing fatal injuries to the driver. With the remaining Alfa Corse enries of Giuseppe Campari and Gastone Brilli-Peri withdrawn, the way was left clear for the Cyclecar graduate Robert Benoist (assisted by Albert Divo) to win for Delage (2)
