Further details
George Eyston's eight wheeled, twin Rolls-Royce engined 'Thunderbolt' went from design stage to complete assembley at the Beans Industries
works at Tipton, Staffordshire in seven months. In October he beat Campbell's 1935 record, achieving 312mph. By August 1938 John Cobb had joined Eyston at Bonneville with his Railton, and the two began their battle for the record. Eyston raised his own record to 345.49mph with a re-engineered 'Thunderbolt'. Nineteen days later Cobb recorded 350.20mph. The next day Eyston again turned out with an improved 'Thunderbolt', with tail fin removed (as in this model) to improve drag effect of the 7 ton car (Cobb's Railton weighed only just over 3 tons). Eyston recorded 357.50mph on 16th September, a target which Cobb would not better until the following year. Eyston's distinguished racing and record breaking career continued after the war with M.G. until retirement in 1954. 'Thunderbolt' is still in existance in New Zealand.
