Lot Essay

This model in stone is first mentioned by C. Clément in 1867 as having been given to general Louis Bro by Théodore Géricault. Géricault appears to have executed the same model in bronze, terracotta and plaster. The earliest mention of a plaster model is in R. Régamey's Géricault, 'Maîtres de l'Art moderne', Paris, 1926, where it it indicated as belonging to Emmanuel Hannaux. A version of it was sold anonymously, Drouot, Paris, 15 June 1990, lot 48.
