Thomire was perhaps the most important bronzier of the Empire period, producing an unparalleled ouvre that spanned ormolu mounts for furniture, sculpture and bronzes d'ameublement, much of it supplied to the Imperial court.

Alexander I (1777 - 1825), son of Paul I of Russia and Maria Feodorovna reigned Russia from 1801 - 1825. Despite original disinterest in joining Napoleon I in his vision of Europe ruled by France and Russia, Alexander was won over by the Emperor after Napoleon offered lenient terms in the peace negotiations following the rout of Friedland in 1807.
