Lot Essay

As with lot 703 the form of this stand is exceedingly rare in cloisonné enamel, but is known in lacquer and wood. A Kangxi period (1662 - 1722) incised and painted red lacquer stand in the C.T. Loo Collection, of the same form as the present stand, with its cinquefoil top and base and tall cabiole legs, is illustrated by M. Beurdeley, Chinese Furniture, Tokyo, New York and San Francisco, 1979, p. 109, no. 148.

Like the previous lot, this beautiful cloisonné stand is exceedingly rare. As discussed in the previous footnote, it seems probable that it was exhibited in the International Exhibition of Chinese Art, London, 1935 - 6, p. 215, no. 2507. If they are the same piece and if exhibit 2504 is indeed the stand now offered as lot 703, then the two stands, which at the time of the exhibition were in the R.C. Bruce Collection, London, have remained together for the last 70 years.
