1969 MERCEDES-BENZ 280SE CABRIOLET
Chassis No. 111025 - 12003505
White with black leather interior and black top
Engine: six cylinder, in-line, single overhead camshaft, 2,778cc, 200bhp at 6,000 rpm; Gearbox: automatic; Suspension: fully independent by wishbones and coil-springs to front, swing-axles at rear, anti-roll bars front and rear; Brakes: four-wheel servo-assisted disc. Left hand drive.
When Mercedes decided it was time for a new 'flagship' sports model to fill the gap left when the classic 300 series cabriolet ceased production some years earlier, they approached the matter with their usual thoroughness. First, in 1961 came the luxury 220SE, straight-six powered, followed by ever more splendid derivatives. The ultimate development was the 280SE which was to become one of the most desirable and rare of Mercedes' many notable open fast touring cars. It was a full five-seater offering every refinement; although clearly descended from previous open models, it challenged every other specialist maker with new standards of performance, luxury and engineering specification. Imparting a top speed of 120mph, the lusty power-plant could project this heavy, lavishly equipped car to 60mph in around 10 seconds with road manners in keeping. Built only in small numbers, the exclusive 280SE was necessarily costly but always desirable. Three decades after its introduction this majestic automobile maintains its appeal; its rarity enhances its prestige.
The 280SE offered here was formerly the personal property of pop icon Madonna, and also appeared in her 1992 music video Deeper and Deeper. Since purchased at auction from Madonna in 1995, this vehicle has been sparingly used and garage kept and shows approximately 70,000 miles. Most recently it has undergone a thorough servicing by one of the country's largest Mercedes-Benz dealerships and is reported to be an excellent driver, but currently the windshield wipers and air conditioner are out of commission. This is an extraordinary opportunity to purchase a sleek, classic automobile with a celebrity history.
