The serpentine padded back and seat covered in yellow and blue striped silk, with downswept arms, on cluster-column legs joined conforming stretchers, previously with castors, one leg later, replacements to stretchers

Lot Essay

The leg pattern features on a suite of needlework-upholstered chairs, supplied in the later 1760s for Padworth House, Berkshire (P. Macquoid & R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1933, vol. III, p. 179, fig. 54).

A pair of chairs with similar 'cluster' column legs was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 1 July 2004, lot 117.
