Lot Essay

G. J. Morant's design for this marble-topped commode, with its Roman-truss pilasters, evolved from a copy that he had also made of Tew's Drawing-Room commode which was designed by George Bullock. Morant's copy and the original, which Bullock had supplied with one of his Mona marble slabs, were both sold from Tew, Christie's house sale, 27-29 May 1987 (lots 36 and 35). The original commode, reflecting Bullock's 'Grecian' style enriched with Louis Quatorze 'Roman' ornament, was invoiced in 1817 as: 'An Oak Cabinet richly inlaid with Holly in pannels of Doors etc. & white mouldings. £25.' together with the top: 'Mona Green marble Top for Ditto 4 ft. 7 in. @ 20 . £4 11s 8d'.
