Born in Jersey his family soon moved to nearby Groombridge where he spent his childhood. He jokes there is wonderful irony in that his father was a publican, and he now lives and deals from the former inn and railway hotel in Ashurst... 'The Bald Faced Stag'. One of Mike's first jobs after graduating in geology was to work for a local builder, and his interest in antique's grew from the pieces salvaged from sites and sold on. This coupled with his knowledge of the raw materials used in architecture and garden ornament steered him into his now flourishing business. In the late 1980's he opened a shop in Tunbridge Wells and called it the Architectural Emporium. Over the period of that decade he firmly established himself as one of the leaders in the marketplace, ranking alongside the likes of Crowthers, Seago and Gifford Meade. In 1999 he acquired the premises in Ashurst and over the last five or six years has amassed the objects that grace this sale. The inspiring content of this catalogue are testament to Mike's taste and style. His infectious passion for his collection is summed up by his obvious delight in the chase and final aquisition of an object, contrasted by the near state of mourning that accompanies it's disposal! This sale will undoubtedly entice, excite, inspire and delight Christie's clients worldwide. Mike, along with his partner Pip, and two children Matilda and Holly are now planning a change of direction in the business, preceeded by a period of extensive travel.
