The silver-gilt blades with mother-of-pearl handles, the handles inlaid with a gold shield engraved with a crowned E, marked on blades, with later French control mark, in a fitted case, the interior with the ink inscription: From Czars of Russia Private Collection Bought and guaranteed from Wartski[...] in London Winifred Kennard 1930

Lot Essay

Prince Eugène de Beauharnais (1781-1824) was the son of general Viscount Alexandre de Beauharnais and Josephine Tascher de la Pagerie. After his father was guillotined, his mother married Napoleon in 1796. He served as Napoleon's aide-de-camp during his Italian and Egyptian campaigns and was later made Viceroy of Italy. In 1805, he married Princess Augusta Amelia of Bavaria.
