This cup and saucer closely follows a design by the sculptor Antoine-Léonard Dupasquier. The engraved initial N is not contemporary with the piece. A more elaborate N and engraved coat-of-arms are found on a teapot, tea caddy, and cup, all by Biennais and known to have been looted from Napoleon's carriage by Prussian troops following his defeat at Waterloo in 1815. It is possible that pieces of silver given by Napoleon as official gifts were later engraved by the recipients, and that this cup is an example of such commemorative engraving.
