Lot Essay

The younger brother of Louis XVI reigned from 1814-1824. As the Comte de Provence, he was forced to flee the Revolution in 1791 and spent the next twenty-three years on the Continent and in England intriguing against the Revolutionary Government and later, Napoleon. In 1814 the Bourbon throne was restored, but Louis XVIII was forced to flee once again after Napoleon's return from Elba. After Waterloo, he returned to Paris with the triumphant Allies.
