Lot Essay
The library-table was possibly commissioned for Swallowfield Park, Berkshire by Sir Henry Russell, 2nd Baronet (d. 1852), former 'Resident of Hyderabad'. Its Grecian pattern corresponds to that of the sideboard-table (lot 216), which was also possibly designed in the 1820s by the architect William Atkinson (d. 1839).
In the mid-1830s Sir Henry transformed his former Saloon into a comfortable Living Room/Drawing Room that was lined with bookcases, so it is possible that this library centre table was introduced at this period.
