A good job that it is customary in the Médoc to grow and use three, sometimes four, varieties, for in 1984, the early ripening Merlot, a grape susceptable to rot, almost completely failed. Palmer's blend is customarily 55 Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 Merlot and 5 Petit Verdot. In common with the rest of the Médoc, the 1984 vintage is consequentally dominated by the Cabernet Sauvignon.
