Lot Essay

For a discussion of this kind of 'summer-winter' table, doubling as a low kang table in winter and a high dining table in the summer, refer to S. Handler, 'On a New World Arose the Kang Table', Journal of the Classical Chinese Furniture Society, Summer 1992, pp. 44-5, in which she also illustrates a plain huanghuali example with crossed stretchers.

Compare an almost identical table, sold in these rooms, Important Chinese Furniture, Formerly the Museum of Classical Chinese Furniture Collection, 19 September 1996, lot 43.
