An exceptional ormolu-mounted tortoiseshell quarter striking organ clock, made for the Turkish market. Circa 1790
The rotunda-form case with cupola top surmounted by an ormolu crescent moon centred by a star manually operating the seven tune selection, the cupola with four trellis-cast sound frets above an ormolu circular gallery within a foliate picket trellis, the four angles applied with out-set beaded ormolu volutes resting on bifurcated foliate cast scoll feet, the side and rear doors heavily cast with sheaves of wheat with oak leaf and acorn surround, the dial signed MARKWICK MARKHAM BORELL LONDON on a white enamel chapter disc with Turkish chapters and moon hands, subsidiary enamel discs below for Music/No Music and Strike/Silent, the silver mask decorated with polychrome enamels with cornucopiae, flowers and foliage, the automaton window above the dial displaying square rigger ships-of-the-line sailing on twisted glass-rod waves before a coastal scene painted with a fortress harbour, the very substantial movement with the going and strike trains mounted to the left side having twin chain fusees and barrels arranged one above the other, verge escapement with transverse-swinging pendulum, hour and ting-tang quarter strike on two bells on the backplate, the foliate engraved movement side-plate signed Henry Borell London, the organ movement with large chain fusee and barrel wound from the side, the star to the top of the case raised and lowered on a notched rod with cam system moving the transverse-mounted wood pin barrel into seven different positions and playing through 52 pipes, the organ side plate engraved with foliage and a basket of flowers and signed Henry Borell London within a foliate cartouche
