Of kidney shape, the upper-section with pierced ormolu gallery, centred to the front by a door inlaid with a Muse standing in a portico, the interior fitted with a single shelf, flanked to each side by a further concaved rectangular door, each inlaid with putti with attributes emblematic of Travel and opening to reveal pigeon-holes, the end of one inlaid with a moonlit owl, and the other with a moonlit hawk, above a green leather-lined writing-surface, flanked on each side by inlaid putti among scrolling foliage, above an inlaid frieze drawer, stamped to the top MAPLE & CO., flanked by further inlaid panels, on square tapering legs and brass castors

Mellier & Co. took over the house of Monbro Circa 1868. Monbro had started business in London in 1861 at 2 Frith Street, near Soho Square. Mellier & Co. moved to Margaret Street, London and were known particularly for their fine reproductions of antique French furniture. They were amongst the English manufacturers who exhibited at the 1904 St Louis International Exibition.
