Lot Essay

Discussing the present work in his book, L'Oeuvre de Victorien-Antoine Bastet, Statuaire, 1852-1905, Jules Belleudy quoted an extract published in la Revue du Midi (1902), commenting that: "La Comète est une gageure, un caprice, un jeu de difficultés. Une femme, aux cheveux flottants, séparés en guise de longues ailes, traverse l'espace et s'y élève. Elle est prodigieuse d'élan, de détente rapide. C'’est une vision reproduite avec une technique qui reste à deviner"

Another example of this model was sold Sotheby's London, 7 October 1994, lot 163 (£13,800).
