Lot Essay

The clock celebrates Love's triumph by evoking the 'Feast of Bacchus' with an Arcadian satyr-nymph reclined, with raised wine-tazza, on a vine-festooned palanquin borne by Cupid-driven and grape-eating bacchic goats. Other versions of this model are illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel et. al., Vergoldete Bronzen, 1986, Vol.I, p.280; in P. Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de la Pendule Française; and Tardy, French Clocks, Vol.II, Paris, 1981, p.20.
