An English mahogany and inlaid longcase clock with moonphase, calendar and tidal indications
William Taylor, Whitehaven. Late 18th Century
The 33cm. (13 in.) wide cut-away brass dial with female mask and foliate spandrels to silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with inner concentric calendar ring, the silvered and foliate scroll engraved centre engraved on banners TAYLOR/KING STREET/WT HAVEN, an aperture below revealing painted panel moving according to the tide, inscribed below FLOWING/EBING, all hands brass and later, with painted rolling moon in the arch, the eight day four pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack strike on bell; built up cheekboards, possibly associated to case with later brass inlays
