PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF RICHARD AUSTIN AND KATHLEEN KNOX SMITH FROM COVE NOOK FARM, GROTON, CT (LOTS 1078-1085) Cove Nook Farm, now on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in the early 18th Century by renowned architect Edward Yeomans. Mr. and Mrs. Smith purchased the house in the 1960's and as a labor of love, meticulously restored it and discriminatingly furnished it with wonderful period furniture and decorations and well executed reproduction pieces, some of which we are offering here. Being well-educated and shrewd collectors, they carefully chose pieces which would genuinely compliment the charming and historic interior of their centuries old farmhouse. Certain pieces in this collection were wedding gifts from Mrs. Smith's mother, Mrs. Katherine McCook Knox. Mrs. Knox was a learned art historian, author, researcher and discerning collector in her own right. She was also a close personal friend and colleague of Helen Clay Frick and a member of the prestigious Frick Reference Library team that catalogued the White House art and antiques collection under the direction of First Lady Lou Henry Hoover. Lots 1083 & 1085 were purchased from her friend, the celebrated dealer Charles Duveen at Charles of London. Duveen, son of Joseph Duveen of the illustrious firm of Duveen Brothers in London, defined the "Olde English" style which became popular in the United states in the early 20th Century. He also helped decorate the marvelous homes of William Randolph Hearst, Henry Huttleston Rogers, Mrs. Henry Ford, Morton F. Plant and many others.
