Lot Essay

The shape of the arms recalls the suite of gilt-gesso chairs supplied for Cannons, Middlesex and attributed to James Moore. The suite was almost certainly acquired for Houghton in circa 1747, and pair of the chairs was sold 'Houghton', Christie's, London, 8 December 1994, lot 135.
