The form of this table, referred to as 'India tea tables' in the 18th century was intended to display Chinese porcelain objects. This example is very similar to a pair at Osterley Park, Middlesex. One of the Osterley tables is illustrated in P. Macquoid, History of English Furniture, The Age of Satinwood, London, 1908, p.10, fig.5. They are listed in the gallery in the 1782 inventory as 'two blackenned and gold japanned tables' (M.Tomlin, 'The 1782 inventory of Osterley Park', Furniture History, 1986, p.120).
