Lot Essay

Engraved mother-of-pearl inlays as seen on present casket, are primarily associated with Dirck van Rijswijck, however several other craftsmen were working in this technique, such as, Jan Visscher, Jeremias Hercules and Franz de Hamilton, and some anonymous artists. The present casket shows a comparable degree of crafstmanship to the above mentioned artists, and must have been influenced by their work as well as that of Van Rijswijck.
