SECOND QUARTER 18TH CENTURY, THE HOOD, DIAL AND MOVEMENT ADAPTED USING ASSOCIATED ELEMENTS
The dial applied with a polychrome painted associated mask decorated with female figures allegorical of the four seasons, and the judgement of Paris to the arch with rolling moon and age of moon indications, silvered and arcaded chapter ring signed LAURENS RUPERT AMSTELDAM, the gilt and matted centre with subsidiary seconds ring centred by a date aperture, with cartouche engraving, conforming engraving around sectors for month with zodiacal symbol and figure and day with zodiacal symbol with figure, ringed winding holes and black painted metal hands, levers to the sides for strike/silent and play/silent, with associated silvered plaque above the arch for selection of six tunes, the substantial movement with later seatboard, anchor escapement and Dutch rack strike on two bells, with music on fourteen bells via twenty-eight hammers operated by a 19cm. long pinned barrel extending through the backboard of the case

Lot Essay

Laurens Rup(p)ert, was a clockmaker from Mainz, he married Maria van
Meurs, the daughter of the important clockmaker Otto van Meurs in 1760.
Stylistically the painting on the mask is very close to two painted masks signed J.H. Strumpff, illustrated in: J. Zeeman, De Nederlandse Staande Klok, Zwolle 1996, pp. 135 & 137.

The case is typical of models made in Amsterdam between 1750 - 1765.
