Rosie Levy was the wife of a wealthy Manchester cotton manufacturer and the artist's most significant patron. Her husband housed the artist and gave him an allowance, relieving Spencelayh of immediate financial worries and therefore giving him the opportunity to refine his technique to that which he is famous for today.
