Upholstered in striped silk with scrolled reeded end and panelled Greek-key rails, on turned and reeded legs, redecorated, bearing paper label to the underside 'Tavistock' and 'Abbey', inscribed in pencil 'restored March 1963 L.A. Wood gilder and decorator'

Lot Essay

The sofa is likely to have been commissioned by John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford (d.1839) following his inheritance of the Woburn estate in 1802. With its Roman 'triclinium' scroll end, it relates to a 'Grecian Squab' in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet Dictionary, 1803 (pl.49), and also to patterns for a 'French Bed' and a 'Chaise Longue' in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808, (pls.29 and 64). The latter's Grecian patterned 'Seat' (pl.33) likewise features rail tablets, with Grecian fretted ribbons, and columnar stump feet, while the distinctive bold Greek-key had already been used by Holland in designs for the Chinese Room at Carlton House in 1789.

This day bed may possibly be part of the £395 6s. invoiced by Marsh and Tatham to the 6th Duke of Bedford in 1804 'being the amount of a Bill delivered for Cabinet and Upholstery Work' at Woburn.
