With rounded rectangular grey-veined white marble top above a frieze drawer with stylised palmette mounts and above a fall-front with flame-figured panels, enclosing a fitted interior with green leather writing surface, drawers and central architectural pigeon-hole above three graduated drawers between rounded andles and on shaped bracket feet, stamped several times with the '1861' inventory, and with inscription in pencil 'Venetian Room' and ink inscription 'Georgiana Bedford' to reverse of one interior drawer

Lot Essay

As the inscription testifies, this sécrétaire was purchased by Georgiana, second wife of John, 6th Duke of Bedford (d.1839), probably whilst travelling through Paris either in 1817 when her son, Lord George William was A.D.C. to the Duke of Wellington, or en route to Leghorn, where she is recorded in 1826.
