A SET OF FIVE GEORGE III WHITE-PAINTED SIDE CHAIRS
CIRCA 1790, ALMOST CERTAINLY DESIGNED BY HENRY HOLLAND AND ATTRIBUTED TO FRANCOIS HERVE
Each originally with caned seat and back, some later adapted to a padded back and seat covered in distressed striped pink silk, the tapering rectangular back with channelled frame and dipped toprail, the padded seat above a channelled seat-rail with stylised rosettes, on square tapering stop-fluted legs headed by rosettes and on tapering spade feet, stamped with the '1861' inventory, with batten carrying-holes and some later blocks, redecorated, one with indistinct pencil inscription 'Halsted 1803' (5)

Lot Essay

Although Mayhew and Ince supplied 'Six French back Chairs with matted seats Japan'd white & Ornamented in Gold, with cushions border'd & quilted in Linen 9.0.0' to the Duchess of Bedford for the Frontv Drawing Room in December 1789, these chairs display all the characteristics of François Hervé's oeuvre.
