Lot Essay

These lithophane panels were perhaps acquired by Lord George William Russell (d.1846) following his appointment as Ambassador to Berlin in 1831, or his son Hastings, subsequently 9th Duke (d.1891). Probably fitted into the East Wing at Woburn, they would have complemented the 'Museum Room' with its Natural History specimens and 'curios' in glass cases. For a related single panel lithophane for a window see Erich Kvllmann, Berliner Porzellan 1763-1963, Braunschweig, 1966, Vol. II, Tafel 231.
