Lot Essay

Wriothesley Russell (1680-1711), was the son of William, Lord Russell and the grandson of William, 5th Earl and 1st Duke of Bedford. His father was accused of involvement with the Rye House Plot and was executed in 1683. In 1695 he married Elizabeth Howland, heiress to John Howland, by whom he acquired a very considerable fortune. He succeeded as 2nd Duke of Bedford in 1700.
