Thomas West, 3rd Baron De la Warr (1577-1618) became the first colonial Governor of Virginia and landed in Jamestown in 1610. He returned to England the following year and published The Relation of the Right Honourable the Lord De la Warre, of the Colonie Planted in Virginia. He gave his name to the state, river and bay 'Delaware'. Thomas West was an ancestor of Elizabeth Sackville West, 9th Duchess of Bedford

Cardinal Pole (D. 1557) was the son of Sir Richard Pole and Margaret Plantagenet, later Countess of Salisbury. In 1539 he was imprisoned with his mother in the Tower of London.
