Clara of Assisi was the founder of the Franciscan Order of Nuns, known as the 'Poor Clares' and the Church of Santa Chiara at Assisi is the chief church of her order. She was a contemporary of St Francis and the Emperor Frederic and was canonised in 1256. Her proper attribute is the pix in allusion to the miraculous dispersion of the Saracens.
