Francis Rawdon Hastings (1754-1826) was a pre-eminent soldier and statesman. He distinguished himself in the American War of Independence and upon his return was created Baron Rawdon in 1783. In 1793 he succeeded his father as 2nd Earl Moira. He was a close friend of the Prince of Wales and and after military campaigns in Flanders and Brittany was made a General in 1803. In 1813 he was appointed Governor-General of Bengal and over his nine year term of office he is credited with establishing British supremacy in central India. In 1817 he was created Marquess of Hastings and seven years later was appointed Governor of Malta.
