Lot Essay
This marble-topped and plinth-supported commode, with silk-lined doors, is designed in the French/antique or Grecian manner, and relates to commode patterns such as those 'intended for those Drawing Rooms used also as living rooms' that G.Smith illustrated in his, Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808. Their 'chiffonier' shelves were described as being, 'chiefly for such books as are in constant use, or not of sufficient consequence for the library' (Smith, pls. 117 and 114). In 1839 this bookcase was inventoried in the Duchess's 'Drawing Room' as 'Bookcase and shelves, marble slab'.
