Born in 1809, William, Lord Russell was the first child of Sir Francis Russell, Marquess of Tavistock and Anna Maria, Marchioness of Tavistock, later the Duke and Duchess of Bedford. Between 1832 and 1841 William Russell held the position of liberal MP for Tavistock before succeeding his father's titles on the 14th May 1861. He died childless in 1872 and his titles passed on to his cousin Francis Charles Hastings Russell.
