Although he lived in London throughout his life, Barenger was a meticulous painter of country life. His subjects included hunting scenes, horses, cattle and dogs. His depiction of the dogs in this picture is particularly engaging as he bred pointers. He exhibited annually at the Royal Academy from 1807 to 1831, and his work was engraved and published in The Sporting Magazine. His wide circle of patrons included, among others, the Duke of Grafton, The Marquess of Londonderry and the Earl of Derby.
