Of circular section, the detachable cover engraved with the coat-of-arms of the city of Dublin and the inscription 'The corporation of the city of Dublin to the Right Hon:ble Theophilus Jones Esq'r 1767', the base engraved with a further coat-of-arms, the interior gilded, marked on side, inside cover and base

Lot Essay

Presented to Theophilus Jones in 1767 during his years' tenure as Chief Secretary of Ireland.

It was practice in the 18th Century, particularly in Ireland, to present visiting dignitaries with the Honorary Freedom of the City. Livery Companies and Guilds also followed this practice. The Freedom scroll was usually encased in a suitable engraved box, usually in silver and occasionally in gold.
