Lot Essay

Presented to Theophilus Jones in 1767 during his years' tenure as Chief Secretary of Ireland.

It was practice in the 18th Century, particularly in Ireland, to present visiting dignitaries with the Honorary Freedom of the City. Livery Companies and Guilds also followed this practice. The Freedom scroll was usually encased in a suitable engraved box, usually in silver and occasionally in gold. For two similar gold boxes formerly in the collection of the Duke of Leinster, also by Benjamin Stokes, see The Glory of The Goldsmith Magnificent Gold and Silver from the Al-Tajir Collection, page 240 and 241, numbers 196 and 197.
