THE HOLLAND BEDROOM FURNITURE (Lots 1362-1367) These formed part of the original Victorian bedroom furnishings at Eaton Hall, commissioned by the 1st Duke of Westminster under the guidance of his architect Alfred Waterhouse. Construction began in 1870, was not completed until 1882, and was rumoured to have cost in excess of £600,000. It was to Holland & Sons that the Duke turned for 'fitting out' the new bedrooms. Holland & Sons were among the most distinguished furniture producers of the Victorian period, starting as Taprell and Holland at the beginning of the 19th Century, and becoming Holland & Sons in 1843. They supplied the furniture for many of the London clubs including the Athenaeum, the Reform Club and the Oxford and Cambridge Club. They took over premises in Mount Street in 1851 and their archives, dating to 1942, when the firm ceased trading, are preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

With a gilt-tooled brown leather top and a pair of moulded drawers with brass ring handles and fan carved corner brackets, on turned and spiral carved legs headed by flower carved panels with brass capped castors, one drawer stamped 'HOLLAND & SONS', the castors stamped 'COPES/PATENT'
