AN ITALIAN WALNUT AND MARQUETRY SMALL CASSONE
LATE 16TH EARLY 17TH CENTURY BUT PROBABLY RE-CONSTRUCTED IN THE 19TH CENTURY
With a moulded lid decorated with inlaid penwork cartouches, the front centred by a panel with a shield supported by a pair of winged figures and flanked by further inlaid panels, the sides with masks, on paw feet, bearing a fragment of a '1948' inventory label to the underside and with a handwritten paper label 'EATON 26 1 31A', one foot of later date
16 in. (41 cm.) high; 30 in. (76 cm.) wide; 13½ in. (34 cm.) deep
