The present head is a rare example of portrait sculpture developed in the last phase of Gandharan art during the 4th and 5th centuries. A new level of realism was achieved, further enhanced through polychrome. Compare with a head of a monk, in S. Czuma, Kushan Sculpture: Image from Early India, 1985, cat. no. 130; and two smaller examples of youthful heads, in A. Poster, From Indian Earth, 4,000 Years of Terracotta Art, 1986, cat. nos. 66 and 68.
