Sensitively carved with rounded face, full lips and downcast eyes, with numerous diminutive images of Buddha arranged in rows around his headdress and centered by a large image of Amitabha

Lot Essay

This head would originally have belonged to a very large sculpture of a radiating Avalokiteshvara, an iconographic form of the late Bayon. Thereby his body is almost entirely covered by miniature images of Buddha, as though they were issuing from every pore of his skin
