PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, inscribed to 'St. Clair Baddeley with the sincerest regards of the authors Richard and Isabel Burton. Nov. 9 - 1886' on front endpaper verso. Baddeley and the Burtons met in 1882 following a lecture by Richard at the R.G.S. Isabel described him as 'a rising young poet,' whose works Richard later added to his library and with whom they corresponded over the years. This is a much Bowdlerized version of Richard's 10-volume 'Nights,' after which he was encourageed to publish the 'Supplemental Nights,' knowing that 'even innocent girlhood tossed aside the chaste volumes' [of his wife]. Isabel is said to have 'slashed her way through the 'Nights' with all the diligence of a member of the Society for the Suppression of Vice.' Her translation proved a failure with less than half the 1,000 sets sold in two years.
