A History of a Voyage to the Coast of Africa, and travels into the interior of that country; containing particular descriptions of the climate and inhabitants, and interesting particulars concerning the slave trade, Philadelphia: for the Author by S. Custick & Co., 1797. 12° (161 x 103mm). Engraved frontispiece. Contemporary speckled sheep (rebacked to style). Provenance: Abel Buckley (signature dated 1797). FIRST EDITION. RARE. No copies are listed as having sold at auction in the past twenty-five years. A second edition was published in Troy, N.Y., in the same year. Evans 32239; Sabin 30956.
SLAVE CONTRACT - A manuscript and letterpress document signed by H.Ellis and G.Rogers, Cape Town, 19 June 1820, 2° (327 x 203mm), one page, recording the transfer of ownership between 'Willem Basson Jan's Son' and 'Pieter Basson Jan's Son' of a 'male slave, named Maartnow', aged 'about twenty eight & 3/4 years born in Mosambique being a Labourer'.
