Oblong 2° (275 x 373mm). 2pp. list of subscribers, dedication to Prince Albert. Lithographed map, 22 tinted lithographed views on 10 plates, one folding, all after Allen, drawn on stone by Allen, W. L. Walton, T. Picken and C. Haghe, all printed by Day & Haghe. (Map and 8 plates spotted.) Original purple cloth, the upper cover with title in gilt below the royal arms blocked in gilt (inner hinges repaired). Provenance: Mrs. Pew (author's presentation inscription 'Presented to Mrs. Pew with best regards, by the author William Allen'). PRESENTATION COPY. Allen had accompanied Richard Lander and Oldfield and carried out a survey of the River Niger in 1832-1833. The present work was published in light of the interest that the proposed expedition of 1841-1842 (under the command of Captain Trotter) generated. Allen went on to command the Wilberforce on this ill-fated expedition. HUTTON, William (Consul at Ashanti).
