ELEPHANTS -- PETRI VON HARTENFELS, Georg Christoph (1633-1718). Elephantographia Curiosa seu Elephanti Descriptio, Erfurt: for the author, 1715. 4° (203 x 170mm). Title printed in red and black, engraved frontispiece and 27 plates, one folding, one engraved illustration by Jacob Petrus after T. Hiltebrandt, woodcut head-, tail-pieces and initials. (Occasional very light dampstaining or spotting, minor worming touching lower edge of a few leaves, light offsetting.) 18th-century papered boards (neatly restored at edges, some scuffing). Modern black cloth slipcase titled in gilt. FIRST EDITION OF AN IMPORTANT EARLY ACCOUNT OF THE ELEPHANT, with delightful and detailed plates illustrating its anatomy, habits and use by man in sport, war, entertainment and commerce. The plate bound at folio 121 shows an elephant fighting a rhinoceros.
