MCCOY, Frederick (1823-1899). Natural History of Victoria. Prodromus of the Zoology of Victoria; or, figures and descriptions of the living species of all classes of the Victorian indigenous animals. Temporary section title at front of each part, volume titles and 'preliminaries' bound at back of parts X and XX. 199 lithographed plates numbered 1-200 with one of the folding plates numbered 79-80, most coloured, a few folding, after A. Bartholomew and others, printed at the Government Printing Office and elsewhere. (Foremargin of plate 6 in part one cut close the image area, plate 42 in part IV laid down, occasional light spotting.) Original wrappers (backstrips worn, parts V, VII and XX with upper or lower covers detached). Provenance: A. V. Williams (signatures on upper covers of parts III-XIX).
A FINE COMPLETE SET OF THE ORIGINAL PARTS TO THIS IMPORTANT ZOOLOGICAL RECORD of the species to be found in the Australian state of Victoria. As the preface mentions, the work was based on the works being produced by various U.S. States on their own 'natural productions'. McCoy outlines his intentions of issuing 'A Prodromus, or preliminary issue, in the form of Decades or numbers of ten plates, each with its complete descriptive letterpress, will be published, of such illustrations as are ready, without systematic order or waiting for the completion of any one branch.' The present completed work includes 57 plates of fish, 18 of molluscs and crustacea, 35 plates of reptiles and 19 of butterflies and other insects. Anker 185; BM(NH) V, p.2212; Nissen ZBI 2629; cf.
